Stainless steel is a high alloy steel with chromium, nickel, molybdenum and other alloy elements with more than 60% iron as the base.
 
When chromium content in steel is more than 12%, steel is not easy to corrode and rust in air and dilute nitric acid. The reason is that chromium and oxygen in the air form a very tight chromium oxide film on the surface of steel, which protects the steel from corrosion. Chromium content in stainless steel generally exceeds 14%, but stainless steel is not rust free. In coastal areas or some places with serious air pollution, there may be some rust spots on the surface of stainless steel exposed to the atmosphere when the chloride ion content in the air is high, but these rust spots are limited to the surface and will not corrode the internal matrix of stainless steel.
 
Stainless steel is classified according to its organization. There are mainly four kinds of stainless steel.
 
1. Austrian steel: corrosion resistance, good weldability and plasticity, but slightly low strength, often used in the manufacture of chemical containers and pipes, such as 304, 316 stainless steel, non-magnetic.
2. Ferritic steel: corrosion resistance, slightly higher strength, often used in the manufacture of chemical equipment, tableware and building decorative components, such as 430 stainless steel, magnetic.
3, martensitic steel: corrosion resistance, high hardness, commonly used in wear resistant parts, magnetic.
4. Bidirectional stainless steel (Austrian + ferrite): It is a new type of stainless steel developed in modern times. It has excellent corrosion resistance and high price. It is mainly used in chemical equipment and has magnetism.
 
Why is stainless steel resistant to oxidation and acid-alkali corrosion in air? This is because stainless steel contains not only iron, but also chromium and nickel with strong corrosion resistance. The content of chromium is generally over 13%, and the content of nickel is about 10%. For example, there is a kind of stainless steel which contains elements other than iron as follows:
 
Cr (CR) 17% ~ 19%; Ni (Ni) 8% ~ 11%;
C (c) is less than 0.14%; Si (SI) is less than 0.80%; Mn (MN) is less than 2%;
P (phosphorus) is less than 0.035%; S (sulfur) is less than 0.03%
